Virginia elected it’s first African-American female for Lieutenant Governor Tuesday night, making history in the commonwealth. But don’t get it twisted; this isn’t a victory for Democracy, BIPOC, women, or for the LGBTQIA+ community.
Winsome Sears, a Jamaican immigrant who gained prominence in Republican politics by posing with military style rifles, was the national chairwoman for black Americans to re-elect Trump. Not only was Sears unsuccessful in getting Mango Mussolini re-elected, but she failed to bring black women into the Republican sphere. According to exit polls, 93% of black women supported President Joe Bien and Vice President Kamala Harris in 2020.
Winsome was a staunch critic of the freedom to mask and vaccinate fellow Virginians. She frequently mocked public servants who wore masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19, a deadly respiratory virus that has killed 747,000+ Americans.
She supports unfettered access to guns in a state that saw one of the deadliest school shooting in American history. The radical right-wing republican wants to force children, who have been raped, to carry the pregnancies of their rapists to term. Sears, a 57-years-old veteran, is perhaps beyond the point of being able to conceive without the assistance of IVF. But if a grandmother finds herself pregnant at 57, Sears wants to force that woman to give birth against her will. The corrupt conservative is out of touch with black women and out of sync with reality.
In the closing weeks of the election, Sears took a hard pivot away from the radical Trumpian persona that gained her popularity on the Right. She changed her twitter profile picture and posted videos about fake advocacy for childhood education. Who does she think she’s fooling?
Journalist will fill the pages of newspapers with a myriad of think pieces about her. But she isn’t worth the analysis. Black folk are the conscious of the nation but there is no need to understand the insanity of a woman Harriet Tubman would’ve left behind.
